David Sebastian Lopez Restrepo

David Sebastian Lopez Restrepo is the 2019 VIVA! kitchen artist-in-residence, a platform that offers an artist the opportunity to develop a relational artwork that will be experienced during daily communal dinners. 

David Sebastian Lopez Restrepo was born and raised in Colombia, where he studied art. His practice as a performance artist however began when he left his country twelve years ago. Because of this, he considers himself a deterritorialized artist. His work plays with his identity as a person that is in constant movement and construction.

David Sebastian generally uses food, everyday actions, and sound as the main materials for his performances. In his work, he prioritizes the interactions involved in doing daily life’s small and sometimes repetitive actions. As an artist, he aims to create, develop, and strengthen the links between society, performance, and other artistic disciplines. Wishing to generate dynamic dialogues between art and culture, David Sebastian’s work deals with topics such as identity, migration politics, collective and individual memory, and the violence and wellness of society.
