Alastair MacLennan

During the 70’s and 80’s, Alastair MacLennan made a number of non-stop performances that lasted up to 144 hours in duration. He has been a member of the performance art entity Black Market International since 1989 and, in 1997, represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale with an inter-media work commemorating those who died as a result of the Political troubles in Northern Ireland. Currently, he travels across Europe, Asia, and North America presenting Actuations (performance/installations). The subject matter of his work is political, social, and cultural malfunction. 

Alastair MacLennan was a founding member of Belfast’s Art and Research Exchange and Belfast’s Bbeyond Performance Art charity. He is presently an Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster, Belfast, where he ran the Master of Arts Fine Art program for 11 years. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the (former) Dartington College of Arts, Devon, England, and an Honorary Associate of the (former) National Review of Live Art, Glasgow, Scotland.
